Masca gorge: booking, access and the conditions nobody mentions

The Masca gorge trail is not freely accessible. It runs on a paid advance booking made through its official website, in a single format — descent only, with a boat exit from the cove — plus a compulsory shuttle from Santiago del Teide and an equipment check at a control point. Visiting the village of Masca by road, on the other hand, needs no paperwork at all.

I get this question often, and it almost always arrives with the same wrong assumption: that Masca is "a pretty trail you do in the morning". It no longer works that way. The path down from the village to the sea is regulated, rated as difficult, and depends on a chain of bookings that has to be assembled in the right order.

I checked the official sources on 9 September 2026. Here is where things stand and, more importantly, what you can do at Masca if you are not going to descend the gorge — which is most people who write to me.

Three different things called "Masca"

First, some untangling:

  1. The Masca gorge trail. The regulated activity: a descent of roughly four hours, rated as difficult, from the village down to the cove, with a boat exit. It requires a booking, a shuttle, equipment and an access check.
  2. The village of Masca. The settlement itself, wedged between rock walls inside Teno Rural Park. Reached by road, walkable, with viewpoints along the way. No permit required.
  3. A scenic route through the north-west. The road circuit linking the Teno massif with Garachico, Icod and the western villages. Also no formalities, and by a wide margin the option that fits a normal day of sightseeing.

Most of what follows deals with the first, because that is where the confusion lives.

How the descent works now

Access to the trail remains part of a pilot regulation scheme, and the conditions have changed more than once. These are the elements in force on 9 September 2026.

One format only

The only format currently available is descent only, with a boat exit from the Masca cove. There is no ordinary option to walk down and back up.

Paid advance booking

Made on the official site caminobarrancodemasca.com, with an assigned time slot. The booking includes, among other things, the loan of a helmet that must be returned at the end, monitoring from the visitor centre to the jetty, accident insurance and initial assistance in a rescue situation.

Compulsory shuttle

You cannot reach the start of the trail in a private vehicle. You must travel from Santiago del Teide on public bus line 355, operated by Titsa, and show that ticket at the control point. Since December 2025 the shuttle is no longer included in the gorge ticket: you pay it as you board.

The stop is in Santiago del Teide, roughly a ten-minute walk from the parking area.

Boat ticket, arranged separately

The return boat ticket from the cove is not included and must be booked with one of the companies operating there. It has to be purchased for no later than four hours after your booked descent slot.

The boat lands at the port of Los Gigantes. Getting from there back to Santiago del Teide is not included either: you arrange it yourself, by public transport or otherwise.

Access control

You must present yourself at the Masca visitor centre thirty minutes before your booked time. Tickets, documentation and equipment are checked there. If something is missing, access can be refused.

Requirements and equipment

  • Closed hiking boots and proper walking clothing.
  • Enough water, with a recommended minimum of 1.5 litres per person: there are no drinking water points on the trail.
  • Food, sun protection, a hat and sunglasses.
  • A helmet, loaned by the Masca trail staff and returned at the end.
  • Minimum age of 8. Under-18s must be accompanied by a responsible adult and, where that adult is not the legal guardian, an authorisation is required.
  • Adequate fitness. The difficulty is officially rated as high. If staff judge that someone is not in a condition to do it safely, they can advise against it and, where relevant, require a signed informed consent accepting the costs of any rescue.

The warning worth reading twice

The boat exit from the cove can close unexpectedly because of adverse sea conditions. When that happens, anyone already inside must walk back up to the visitor centre from wherever they are at that moment.

In other words: you may have booked a descent and end up doing a long, unplanned climb with the day’s fatigue already in your legs. This is not a theoretical possibility, and it is better said beforehand than afterwards.

Under the official conditions, Masca beach is also closed to the public.

What to do at Masca if you are not descending

This is where I can be most useful, because it is what nearly everyone actually wants, even when they arrive asking about the gorge.

The village of Masca is worth the visit in its own right. It sits inside Teno Rural Park, wedged between vertical walls, and its history has far more to do with isolation and subsistence farming than with tourism. The access road is narrow with continuous bends and parking is limited: go early or outside the middle hours of the day.

From there, the north-west fills a whole day with no formalities at all: viewpoints over the massif, the landscape of Teno Alto, Garachico and its history tied to the eighteenth-century eruption, and the western villages.

One important note about Teno. Road access to Punta de Teno along the TF-445 is subject to permanent restrictions and, since January 2026, to roadworks that have brought a ban on access by private vehicle, on foot and by bicycle for as long as they last. I cover it in guided hiking in Teno.

How I can help

I do not offer the Masca gorge descent. It is a regulated activity with its own chain of bookings and conditions, and it is not part of what I prepare.

What I can do is take you into the north-west with judgement: the village, the viewpoints over the Teno massif, Garachico and the western landscape, adjusting the route to real driving times and to what is actually open that day. I am an official tourist guide of the Canary Islands (GTI-289) and a qualified low and mid-mountain trail guide (AFDA0611), and this is an area where knowing the access situation matters.

If walking is what draws you, look at private guided hiking: the route is agreed according to your level, the date and the conditions.

Frequently asked questions

Can I do the Masca gorge on my own without booking? No. Access is regulated and requires an advance booking, the shuttle from Santiago del Teide and a boat ticket already arranged. Without those, entry can be refused at the control point.

Can I drive to the start of the trail? No. Private vehicle access to the trailhead is not permitted, and you must show the shuttle ticket. Cars are left in the parking area at Santiago del Teide.

Is the boat included in the booking price? No. The boat ticket is arranged separately with one of the companies operating at the cove, and must be booked for no later than four hours after your descent slot.

How do I get back to Santiago del Teide after the boat? On your own. The boat lands at Los Gigantes and the return is not included. Public transport covers that route, but check the timetables before booking the descent.

Is it suitable for children? The minimum age is 8 and minors must be with a responsible adult. That said, the difficulty is officially rated as high, and I would not recommend it with young children simply because they meet the minimum.

Can I visit Masca village without doing the gorge? Yes, and that is what most people do. The village is reached by road with no formalities. What needs planning is parking and the time of day.

What happens if the sea prevents the boat leaving? You walk back up to the visitor centre from wherever you are. That is the main reason not to treat the descent as a light activity.

Do residents pay the same? There are specific arrangements for residents, verified at the visitor centre itself. Check them on the official website, since the verification procedure can change.

Check before you travel

The Masca regulation is a pilot scheme and has changed several times, including the removal of the shuttle from the ticket in December 2025. Verify the current conditions on the official site caminobarrancodemasca.com and check the bus timetables at titsa.com before booking anything.

If you would rather have a day in the north-west without the complexity of the descent, write to me with your dates and I will tell you what is realistic in a day.
