Private tours from Costa Adeje and southern Tenerife

From the south of Tenerife, what fits best into a day is Teide National Park and the west of the island, because those are the areas you reach in a reasonable drive. The historic north is possible too, but it eats considerably more road time and is worth choosing knowingly. The pick-up and the route are agreed before booking.

I am Daniela Mira, an official tourist guide of the Canary Islands. I work with a lot of travellers based in Costa Adeje, Los Cristianos, Playa de las Américas, El Duque, La Caleta and the surrounding area, and this page exists to answer one very specific question: what genuinely fits into a day from there.

The south is not far from everything, but it is far from some things

This is the conversation I have almost every time. The island looks small on the map, but off the motorway you are on mountain roads with continuous bends, and real times are noticeably longer than a route planner suggests.

From the south, in practice:

  • The drive up to Teide National Park is direct and it is the journey that repays best.
  • The west is within reach: Los Gigantes, the Teno massif, the village of Masca, Garachico and Icod.
  • The historic north and Anaga are at the far end. You can go, but the day fills up with road.
  • Combining two of those three areas in one day does not work. And that is something I would rather say before you book.

What suits you best from the south

Teide, in the afternoon and at night

This is what works best. The climb from the south is among the most direct, and arriving late in the day has two advantages: fewer people, and light that transforms the colour of the volcanic landscape. Once it gets dark, the telescope session happens on the same trip.

I am Starlight Guide no. 40 and I work with a Celestron NexStar Evolution 8 telescope.

A day through the west and north-west

Cliffs, the Teno massif, the village of Masca and the western villages. It is a day of continuous landscape and winding roads, built around where you are staying and the hours available.

Worth knowing: this area has regulated access points and the situation changes. I explain it in the Masca gorge piece and in guided hiking in Teno.

→ Full Day Tenerife, eight hours with an agreed itinerary.

Walking, if that is your thing

A low or mid-mountain route agreed according to your level, the date and the conditions. I hold the qualification of low and mid-mountain trail guide (AFDA0611) and the activity is registered for active tourism (TA-4-0026356.16), with the insurance the regulations require.

→ Private guided hiking.

The north, if you are willing to make the drive

La Laguna, Anaga or the wine route are perfectly possible from the south. What changes is how much of the day goes into the car. If it is your only chance to see the north, it can pay off; if you have more days, giving it a whole day usually works better.

→ Nature, culture and food.

How pick-up works

It is agreed before booking. Tell me where you are staying and I will confirm the point and the time in the proposal, along with the route and the price for your group.

I do not publish zones or surcharges, because they depend on the individual case and I would rather give you a final price in writing before you decide, with nothing left to discover.

If you arrive by cruise ship

The south is not a cruise port: ships dock at Santa Cruz de Tenerife. There is a dedicated page for that case, with the route matched to real docking and departure times.

→ Private shore excursion.

What to tell me when you write

  • Possible dates.
  • Exactly where you are staying within the south.
  • How many of you there are, and ages if minors are travelling.
  • What you would like to see and what you have already seen.
  • How many hours you genuinely have that day.
  • Language: Spanish, English or Italian.
  • Any mobility, health or dietary needs.

With that I will tell you what is realistic and prepare the proposal. If two things do not fit in the same day, I will say so then.

Frequently asked questions

How long does it take from Costa Adeje to Teide? Less than people fear, but more than the map says: it is mountain road with continuous bends. I would rather give you the real estimate for your date and pick-up point in the proposal than publish a figure that can mislead.

Can I see Teide and the north on the same day from the south? Technically yes; sensibly, almost never. They are opposite ends with opposite climates and the day turns into a long transfer. If you only have one day, pick one.

Is there pick-up at my hotel? Pick-up is agreed before booking. Tell me where you are staying and I will confirm it in the proposal.

How many of us can there be? I do not publish a maximum. The logistics adapt to the group, and where more seats are needed I arrange the vehicle or the collaborators required.

What if the day starts with calima or cloud? In Tenerife that rarely means cancelling: it means changing altitude or slope. I check conditions before we set out and, if they affect the plan, we discuss it before deciding.

Can I do a short evening outing and still spend the day at the beach? Yes, and it is one of the most requested combinations from the south. The three-hour session is designed precisely for that.

Which language is the tour in? Spanish, English or Italian, agreed before confirming.
